We are a group of Nova Scotians using using John Kennedy Toole’s brilliant novel title to capture the essence of the political culture in the fair province of Nova Scotia.
This beautiful little finger of land that juts out from the eastern seaboard of North America was once a proud, self-sufficient, mercantile economy, an engine of Canada and the British Empire.
Still proud of its culture, scenery and past, Nova Scotia is not proud of its politics.
In recent years, its resource-based economy has dwindled and Nova Scotia has been reduced to begging for equalization money and handouts from Ottawa.
Because former John Buchanan pillaged this province’s future with his spending, Nova Scotia is now saddled with a $12.5 billion debt. Servicing that debt is now the fourth largest expenditure.
The children of John Buchanan’s tenure are now paying for his shopping spree. And their children will pay as well.
Most Nova Scotian leaders since Buchanan have lacked charisma and talent, the one exception being John Savage, who wasn’t perfect but who at least had a vision, intelligence and the will make Nova Scotia a better place.
For some reason the party political culture in Nova Scotia shies away from strong robust leaders like Danny of Newfoundland politics. Pity.
Now we are stuck with Rodo McDodo, also known as Rodney MacDonald, the Cape Breton fiddler and former gym teacher.
He regards position as premier as a job with perks and he will do anything to keep that job and its perks which include helicopter rides paid for by tax payers. His naive and talentless government has a reputation for flub-ups and ministerial indiscretion, and Rodo’s lackluster leadership is legendary.
This blog will document the comings and goings in the Confederacy of Dunces. The hope is we can make a small contribution to the demise of this crop of ruling dumb dumbs.
We do this because we think Nova Scotia is worth defending.
