Bill Casey – the thorn in the side to self-interested politicians in Nova Scotia and Ottawa- has announced he will not run in the next election.
It’s a sad moment for Nova Scotia politics.
Bill Casey stood up to Stephen Harper who cut and run on the original Atlantic Accord Agreement Nova Scotia. Casey stood his ground and refused to vote for Harper’s budget that enshrined the betrayal of Nova Scotia.
And Stephen Harper kicked him out of the Tory caucus.
And who stood up for Mr. Casey?
Rodney Macdonald, premier of Nova Scotia whose interests Casey bravery served?
No. Rodney did not stand up for Bill Casey. Rodney was too busy buddying up to Stephen Harper, renegotiating a lesser deal for his province.
Peter MacKay, Gerald Keddy? No, they did not stand up for Mr. Casey either. They had their own political hides to protect.
Former Premier John Hamm who negotiated the original deal? No. Dr. Hamm stood by in feeble silence after his deal was betrayed. He didn’t have the political courage like John Crosby of Newfoundland who went to Ottawa to testify before a Senate hearing on the betrayal.
No. None of the self-interested politicians supported this modern day folk hero of Nova Scotia politics.
But then you wouldn’t expect that of politicians in the little Tartan Republic of Nova Scotia. They keep their own nests feathered. The province be damned.
But the people stood up for Bill Casey. He is a hero in this province. Our hero. There are so few in Nova Scotia politics.
We are sad to lose him.
Long live Bill Casey.
